Hypnotherapy - What is Hypnosis?

"AN ALTERED STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS WHERE THE SUBCONSCIOUS LEVEL OF THE MIND IS IN A STATE OF HYPER-SUGGESTIBILITY"

Hypnosis is a relaxed state of mind where you become more open to suggestions. You may be more willing to follow instructions and focus intently on what the hypnotist says. In deeper hypnosis, you may respond to suggestions as if they were real, even if they differ from your actual surroundings. Hypnosis can also influence your memories and self-awareness. These effects can sometimes continue even after the hypnosis session ends, affecting your thoughts and behaviors.  Essentially, hypnosis can help you create positive changes by using the power of suggestion.

Here are some of the things hypnosis can help with:

  • Pain management
  • Reducing anxiety and stress
  • Trauma / PTSD
  • Improving sleep
  • Quitting smoking
  • Substance Dependency (Addiction)
  • Building confidence

Hypnosis is safe and effective when practiced by a qualified professional. If you are interested in learning more about hypnosis, please contact us today.

Important things to know:

  • You are always in control during hypnosis. You can choose to accept or reject any suggestions made by the hypnotherapist.
  • Hypnosis is not mind control. You cannot be made to do anything against your will.

Common Misconceptions About Hypnotherapy

Loss of Consciousness

Loss of Consciousness

Loss of Consciousness

This is probably the most common misconception surrounding hypnosis. Many believe that people who are hypnotized are unconscious. This misunderstanding can be directly attributed to stage hypnosis, and the way hypnosis has often been portrayed in films and on TV. But rest assured, you'll actually be more focused than usual. Hypnosis isn't about becoming unconscious, it's about achieving a state of deep relaxation where you're highly receptive to positive suggestions.

Surrender of Will

There's another common misconception, fueled by popular portrayals, that hypnosis is about losing control or submitting to a hypnotist's will. Since hypnosis is a highly personal experience, nothing could be further from the truth. You remain in complete control and capable of making decisions throughout the entire process.

Weak Mindedness

Loss of Consciousness

Revelation of Secrets

This misconception stems from the belief that hypnosis requires a lack of intelligence. In fact, because it involves focused concentration, hypnosis can be even more effective for individuals with strong minds.

Revelation of Secrets

Another concern is that hypnosis forces you to reveal hidden secrets. However, hypnosis doesn't bypass your will. You remain aware throughout the session and can choose what to share. You can communicate freely and even choose not to answer questions, just like in any normal conversation.

Similar to the misconception about weak-mindedness, some people think that being easily hypnotized makes you gullible.  In reality, hypnosis is about focus and openness to suggestion, not naivety.  Just like some people learn languages more easily, some people enter a hypnotic state more readily.

Dominant Personality

Lastly, some are under the false assumption that hypnosis requires a forceful personality or that men are naturally better suited to be hypnotists.  Neither is true!  Skill and training are key, and some of the most effective practitioners are women.
